Special Event: Vintage Tournament
December 8th, 2008Two weeks ago I proposed we do something special for the last tournament before the end of the year, and the idea was a catch. After much debating we’ve come to a consensus: we’re playing Vintage, but with a few more proxies.
Oh, and because this is a special tournament, we’ll have a special kind of prize too. It’s a surprise, though, and I don’t intend to spoil it.
What I can let you know is that no one will miss out.
Format and Additional Tournament Rules
You may use proxies for up to 40% of the spells and non-basic lands altogether. For example, if a 60-cards deck has 20 basic lands it means there are a total of 40 spells and non-basic lands altogether, which means that deck may use proxies for 16 spells. Some of you may need to chose wisely what they’re using their proxies on. Also, don’t forget this is a good chance to play many of those 15th Anniversary dragons!
If the decks uses proxies, the proxy cards must NOT be distinguishable from the rest of the cards when face-down. It is recommended that you use opaque-back sleeves, but not necessary so long as you respect the rule above. (LEX Copy Center has such sleeves, in packs of 50, which means you’d have to buy two packs to be usable for a 60-card deck, which may seem quite expensive. However, it’s worth the investment, since they’re high-quality sleeves.)
Each proxy card must contain: the name of the card in English, the mana cost, the card type and the rule text, as per the Oracle database. Colors are abbreviated as {W}, {U}, {B}, {R} and {G}, and colorless mana costs as {X}, {1}, {2}, etc. The tap symbol is abbreviated {T} and the untap symbol is {Q}. Hybrid mana costs are abbreviated as {W/U}.
All the rules of the constructed Vintage format apply, including the rules of the banned cards. You check details about the Vintage Format deck construction on the official Magic: The Gathering website.
The decks will be checked for conformity before the start of the event, by the player on the side, across the table. Be sure to use legal decks, though, no one like players skipping the event due to bad deck construction.
Now I can only hope we all have time to build those nasty Vintage decks.
