Two Headed Giant results

November 18th, 2008

It seems to me like the Two Headed Giant isn’t supported enough or something. It’s true it’s a format to which less people have access since you have to pair with someone and actually build two decks together to play. Still, though, I feel like we could have some more participation.

I’m thinking two more teams, maybe? Last time there were 5 teams. Being the bye team really sucks, but it also means there are 3 rounds instead of 2, which means more fun. This time we were only 4 teams, which meant playing 2 rounds and that’s it… 6 teams would really work well: 3 rounds, everybody playing. A lot more fun, I tell ya.

Dan and Raisa played Jace and Chandra decks (respectively) and surprisingly, this alliance decimated all other opponents. Jace controlled what Chandra couldn’t burn, and Chandra burned what Jace couldn’t control, while the opponents were left in awe. Mircea and I played almost the same strategy as last time (red/green combo and blue/green control respectively), but I guess Mircea’s blue wasn’t as blue as Dan’s blue deck.

The reason why the other four decks didn’t do so well had nothing to do with luck. They were nowhere near as focused as the two pairs that got into the finals, pairs that followed a simple strategy - one deck is the control force, the other is the beatdown. Albert’s Esper and Bogdan’s 5-color deck full of Alara’s mythic rares, and the combination of Treefolks and red-green beatdown/land destruction, played by Ender/Mydas, simply lacked the punch for a homerun.

This Two Headed Giant did prove one fact: Jace and Chandra shouldn’t fight. Instead, an alliance would be much more fruitful.

PS. Thanks to Mydas for helping writing this post.
