EDH vs. T1

November 24th, 2008

A few days back I’ve mumbled a few things about a special event to end the year with. Here are a couple finalist ideas. Of course, you’re free to post new ideas in the comments, and if the catch up we’ll do that instead.

Elder Dragon Highlander

The most wicked idea, if you ask me, is that we play a totally different format. I don’t even know if we can sanction this format, and I don’t even fully comprehend the rules yet, but from what I’ve read this format is truly wicked and fun. I came across it just a couple of weeks ago, when it was featured on Magic Arcana. The format itself seems to have a big history of about a couple of years.

Before reading any further, be sure to read the EDH rules.

If we’re to choose this format, I’ve readied a page where we can all announce our Generals. The Generals are allocated first-come, first-serve and are preserved between meetings/games, so you’ll have to chose wisely.

Vintage

Another wicked idea, but I’ve yet to analyse how much fun this would be. And to be sure it’s really fun, we’ll be playing with up to 25% of the spells allowed to be proxies. (Not 25% of the deck, but 25% of the spells.) Details about how we’ll organize this will follow. (Like if you decide to play with proxies make sure you have non-transparent sleeves.)

All the rules of the Vintage format would still apply, including the rules of the banned cards. You check details about the Vintage Format deck construction on the official Magic: The Gathering website.

Let’s hear your choices in the comments!

EDH sounds good, but here are some other options that sound even crazier (They are mass-multiplayer formats with shared decks :D, i think that would enforce the community idea a bit) Check them out, the ones I like best are Arena Magic and Magical Chairs: http://www.magicdeckvortex.com/mdvarticle0114.htm

Or we could do some funny backdrafting :))

Backdraft is a drafting format in which players try to draft the worst decks. Players draft cards then pass the pool two spaces to the left once the drafting process is complete. The recipients of these pools build the best deck they can. The participants play the person across from them at the draft table.

I would personally love Vintage :D
Besides that there is a whole lot of fun playing with old decks, we’ll get to learn a bit more about the old cards, sets, tactics and everything related to them, since most of us know almost everything about the new sets

  4. Albert Says:

or it would be interesting to do a draft(or backdraft or whatever) with an old set

  5. Albert Says:

but the problem with that is that we have to find a place to buy old boosters

also the formats Mircea listed with his link are pretty nice but we could do some deviations like this:
Every guy comes with a 40 card deck (30monocolors and 10 multicolors, no lands) and a separate 30 card deck (only lands of which 4 basic lands of each color (20) and the rest of 10 special lands or artifacts that are considered to be mana sources. the only rule that the decks will have will be “no cards that allow you to search for cards in the deck or manipulate the deck in any way”. (we’ll have to come up with an idea so that at the end we’ll manage to get each one’s cards back.. notes inside the sleeves would be a good idea, since different sleeved wouldn’t be such a great idea as you’ll be able to tell what you are drawing)
The 40 card and the 30 card decks will be shuffled separately and put in the middle of the table.
This is a mass-multiplayer format meaning each one will be able to attack anyone (we could add vendetta rules in here to make it more spicy) and i suggest 20 lifes for each on the 1st round and 30 on the vendetta round (if we use vendetta)
As players will start they will each draw 7 cards from the big deck and at each one’s turn (even the 1st to start) he will be able to choose either to draw a card from the big deck or put a card directly from the land deck into play (no lands go in hand)
the rest are normal multiplayer rules
I don’t know if my idea is all that great, but I really can’t think of any more interesting stuff at this hour

  7. Albert Says:

i forgot to add.. no mulligans!

  8. Mircea Says:

I concur, Vintage would rock, but I would up the percent on those proxies a little bit. Maybe it’s me, but my card pool is really “limited” if you know what i mean :)).

  9. Mydas Says:

Vintage would be really great. I’m vote for that, with 15 proxies.

  10. Xenocyde Says:

In for Vintage :D How about 17 proxies?

  11. Mircea Says:

Please express the proxy number in percents, so I vote for 50% of the spells.

  12. Xenocyde Says:

OK, I vote for 50% of the spells as well.

  13. Albert Says:

    i vote for 50% too

  14. Mihai Alexandru Bîrsan Says:

After much debating (inside of my head) I’ve decided we host the game with 40% proxies. Read more in the event announcement post.

[...] events, we just draft the latest block. Mircea proposed we play backdrafting this time. He first came up with the idea during the EDH vs. T1 debate last winter. Let’s hear what you think about that on the forum! [...]
